Title: What aircraft used the Delco IV-A
Post by bronicadave on Jan 12th, 2008, 3:12pm

In the interest of historical accuracy, I'm trying to refrain from installing this great gauge in every aircraft in my simulator. Can somebody tell me what aircraft used this system? I'm guessing most of the jet airliners of the 70s vintage. So a DC-10 would be accurate but probably not a Cessna 152? What about any turboprops, Electra or Vanguard?

hi,
Delco INS was installed on board of all long haul planes and on board of medium haul planes operating legs where the only navigation mean was the INS.

bronicadave,

In the 1970's and 1980's, prior to my retirement from United, at least our DC-8-52's, -61's, and -62's used the Delco Carousel INS.  Others I flew that had it included the DC-10-10's and -30's and the Boeing 747-200's.  I believe that the DC-8F's (freighters) also used the same INS.

Quink

I do believe that, especially at those times, a single unit would cost more than a c152.
Plus, after getting them, you have also to maintain them, which is, again, not something very cheap.
That is why it was installed only on those planes which absolutely required it, for the routes they were flying.

Marco
