My INS works flawlessly!!! But I get what seems to be the wrong code in the following situation:-
The Ready NAV light is lit and I accidently push-back before selecting NAV on the MSU. Lately instead of the expected error code 04 57 I'm getting 08-20 and 08-21 which means that I have to completely restart the sim.

You're getting 08-20 and 08-21 which means that you have to reinstall the whole civa package because the INS.GAU or CIVA_ID.DAT aren't in the proper folder or the binary file may be probably corrupted.
See fs9/civa /Doc /action and malfunction codes.
