Title: How Long for a DME Update?
Post by Trailboss on Jan 9th, 2011, 3:39am

My CIVA INS is working perfectly on a CS B-52, and I have now tried for the first time to do a DME update.  I have followed the steps in the manual point by point, but when I get the green flag that one of the CDUs is updating, it stays on for more than 30 minutes and sometimes never goes off.  When following the steps on page 15 and after the "relevant green flag in view" am I reading the next step correctly?:
It says CDU selector____________Any position but WAYPT and DIS/TIME.
Am I correct that as soon as I get the green flag I should change the CDU selector (which at that point is on DIS/TIME according to the checklist) to any of the other selections, but that it must be changed AWAY FROM DIS/TIME and should NOT be set to WAYPT?  I have done it that way, but 30 minutes later the green flag was still on, so I changed it to DIS/TIME and after 15 more minutes the green flag went off.  However, I don't know if that was because the INS updated, or did I cause it to exit DME updating?
Thanks in advance for a clarification of this point.

Let's suppose your CDU selector is on POS or DIS/TIME.
The selector on DIS/TIME need not be changed in order to execute your DME selection.

Right click your mouse on 7 and 9 /WPT Change/WPT No./Insert
move your selector to POS and then back to DIS/TIME. The green light will stay on (as it should) until the DME is out of range.

If your CDU is on POS move it to WYPT execute the above right click procedure again. Then move your selector back to POS. Again your green light will stay on until out of range.

What the manuel intends is that you cycle the selector away from WAYPT or DIS/TIME through POS and back to your original settings.

Thanks for the fast reply, Vololiberista, that makes DME update procedures very clear.

I need one more clarification on DME updating.  When it comes to loading the DME STATION ELEVATION per the instructions I should put in a single digit (or double digit for an elevation above 9K) rounding the elevation to the nearest 1000.  For example, if the elevation is 2,750 I should enter 3.  I note that the display showed 0 the first time, and then the previous elevation the next time I ran an update, which I understand that is normal.  However, the first display was .0 and then the elevation for a previous update was displayed as .6     Is this correct that the elevation value is shown AFTER (to the right of) a decimal point?
Thanks for your continued help.
