Everything freezes
Aug 20th, 2007, 7:13pm

Could anyone get me out of my frustration? By the time I enter all the waypoints in the INS, all my commands freeze on the a/c, except for the power levers. :'(
Thank you for your help in advance.

What do you mean with "all my commands freeze"? Could you provide more details?
Did you enable the Keyboard Capture mode on the CDU and then forgot to turn it off?

Regards
Marco

Marco, I was attempting to do my first Tutorial Flight. I had the LAT/LONG displayed on top of the cockpit by using Shift+Z.
During this time I was inserting all the waypoints as instructed in the tutorial. When finished, I could not cancel Shift+Z, minimize Carousel, change views or even ESC from FS. I actually had to do a Control Alt Del to start my FS up again from scratch.
Regards,
Nick aka skipper
PS. also during these inserts the INS was in Align mode, but never had the green light coming up. The 15 minutes were way over by this time.

Question: To enter all waypoints coordinates did you enable the "Keyboard Capture Mode" by pressing the upper left screw of the CDU, so that you can enter them by typing on the keyboard numeric pad, or did you enter them with the mouse clicking on the CDU "keys"?

Hi Marco,
No...I was entering all way points with the mouse and by the panel on the INS.
Today, I have decided to go an other way and copied the panel.cfg from the 737 sample in the program and pasted it into the MS 737....still no green light, but at least nothing frozen. When I inserted all the way points, I even shut the engines down, but on the flight out from Boston my pos'n was nothing like I should have had. I was forced to navigate by the GPS. Sorry to be such a pain in the "proverbial"...lol
Thanks for your concern already.
Nick

Hello Marco,
Well I have tried to align the INS in the VC10 as well as the standard 737. The following has happened.
I went through the first few paragraphs of the Tutorial Flight...up till the alignment stage.
VC 10
Pos....set in ramp position on both units
CDU set to DSRTK/STS on both units
MSU set to Align
Read out as follows
First window 0 degrees
Second window 002  95 these read outs on both units
No visible alignments at all.
After 15 mins I pressed the fast align screw on both MSU's...no effect..no magic green light.

I have tried the same thing in the 737

on the alignment stage the windows showed the following.

First window 0 degrees
Second window 006   95
After a little while the 006 went down to 002, but no further. Still no magic green light after about 20 minutes.

I must be dense or something. (I am crying for the old days of the ASN42 system in the P3 Orions....lol)

If engines have already been started then make sure they're idle (press F1) and check Parking Brakes are SET
Turn ON all INS units by moving the MSU Mode Selector knob into the STBY position

a) Enter the present position on ALL units
b) Move MSU Mode Selector to ALIGN
c) CDU Data Selector to DSRTK/STS
d) Check (and CLEAR) any pending Action and Malfunction Codes (see CIVA/Docs/DisplayedStatus.pdf!!)

The green light will illuminate, this is guaranteed! Smiley

So I think you're doing something wrong.

You wrote "Second window 002  95" (please use the correct terminology, that "second window" is in fact the "right data display").
Well the "02" is an Action Code (again read CIVA/Docs/DisplayedStatus.pdf and CIVA/Docs/ActionAndMalfunctionCodes.pdf) which should NOT be there. You're not reporting which was the associated Malfunction Code so I can't tell you what happened.

Please read the manuals, you will not be able to use the INS if you try to learn it by practice only.

Regards
Marco

Hi Marco, I am sorry I have not used the correct terminology. On the subject of reporting, I have written down for you exactly what was shown on the display. Anyway, back to the books and we shall see what will happen.
Thank you for your help.
Regards,
Nick
